Disable Non Genuine Windows Messages
by Andrew Smith
Windows XP includes a feature called "Automatic Updates". This feature allows security and application updates to be installed automatically. The idea is to protect the users computer proactively before it has a chance to become compromised.
But recently Microsoft has been automatically installing updates that are neither critical or necessary, but actually introduce extreme anti piracy policies on the unsuspecting users computer without his or her permission.
If the new software thinks that your windows serial number is invalid(there are false positives), it will deploy a nag screen every time you log into or out of windows accusing you of stealing your copy of Windows. A taskbar icon will indicate to any users that your computer is running on pirated software.
There is no removal tool, but it is not difficult to remove the unwanted update.
The first thing you need to do, is to click start, then move your mouse over "settings", then click "control panel"
Click the "Tools" menu, and then click the "Folder Options" menu item. There will be four tabs, click the second one which is named "View". On the view tab, scroll down to the option that says "Use Simple File Sharing". Make sure this is turned off.
You can now exit control panel.
Click start, then run, type explorer
browse to C:\windows\system32\
look for a file named WGALogon.dll
right click on this file and select properties.
Click the "Security" tab.
Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom
from the next dialog, un-check the "Inherit permissions from parent folder" option.
For each use listed, remove them all.
Then add a new user by clicking add. In the dialog, type "everyone", and click ok.
A dialog of permissions will come up now.
Make sure every one of them is disabled except for "list folder/read data", and "read".
click ok for all dialogs, reboot, and you will never see the "Nag" screens again.
If you have a pirated copy, buy the real thing. This article is for those people suffering from false positives.
